The Role of Telecom in Enabling the Metaverse and XR Technologies
Abstract
The advent of the Metaverse and Extended Reality (XR) technologies—encompassing augmented, virtual, and mixed reality—promises to revolutionize digital interaction by delivering immersive and interactive experiences. Central to realizing this vision is the telecommunications industry, which provides the critical infrastructure necessary to support the high bandwidth, ultra-low latency, and reliable connectivity demands of these next-generation applications. This paper examines the pivotal role of telecom networks, particularly 5G and future 6G technologies, in enabling the widespread adoption of the Metaverse and XR. It explores key enabling technologies, including edge computing, network slicing, and cloud integration, as well as the emerging use cases spanning social interaction, enterprise collaboration, healthcare, and entertainment. The challenges telecom providers face, such as scaling network capacity, ensuring security, and fostering interoperability, are also discussed. Finally, the paper highlights the new business opportunities and strategic directions for telecom operators, emphasizing their essential role in shaping the future of immersive digital ecosystems.
