Vishalakshi Prabhu H

Abstract

Pervasive healthcare is a technology that assures efficient, accurate medical treatment at any time. This is realized recently because of the progress in wireless communication techniques and miniature electronics producing capable sensors to be used on, implanted inside or surrounding the human body. In this regard, Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) comprises an emerging field of innovation as it has potential of improvement in the continuous monitoring of healthcare. WBAN comprises of many heterogeneous sensors to check biological phenomena. Such sensors are kept in different body parts or can be wearable or implanted beneath the user skin. Each of them has definite requirements and is utilized for various missions. A WBAN system is dependent on WPAN wireless communication protocol devices as gateways to send data to farther distances. It is conceivable to interface the wearable gadgets on the human body to the web/internet through such gateway devices. This assists medical professionals to gather patient data online. In this paper, we provide overview of WBAN system, various challenges involved in the implementation and the present market scenario. Apart from medical application, the paper also identifies other applications and its scope.
