ChronoShelf: A Barcode and OCR Based Product Expiry Monitoring System

Dr. M. Deepa, Archana Gurusamy, Anika V, Anisabarvin A, Hemalatha PN

Abstract

ChronoShelf is a smart expiry management system developed to help users monitor product expiry dates, reduce waste, and improve safety. The platform combines barcode scanning, Optical Character Recognition (OCR), and Artificial Intelligence to identify products, extract expiry information, and notify users before products expire. The system is designed for packaged food items, medicines, cosmetics, and retail products. Users can securely log in, add items manually or through scanning, view expiry summaries, and receive suggestions for using products that are close to expiration.

The application uses a full-stack architecture with a React frontend, Node.js and Express backend, and MongoDB database. Barcode scanning is performed using Quagga2 and native BarcodeDetector APIs, while expiry labels are detected through OCR using Tesseract.js. The platform also provides personalized dashboards showing spending, losses, savings, and expiry trends. By automating expiry tracking, ChronoShelf reduces manual effort, prevents accidental use of expired products, and supports smarter inventory management across households, supermarkets, pharmacies, and warehouses.
