Performance Evaluation of a Continuous Line Manufacturing System using Overall Equipment Effectiveness and Line Balancing
Abstract
This project was undertaken to evaluate the performance of a continuous line manufacturing system using overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) and line balancing in a rice packaging company. The process adopted was to analyze data from the equipment in the production line, evaluate them using overall equipment effectiveness and improve the continuous line manufacturing system of a rice packaging company using the results as a source of the decisions to increase productivity. Also, line balancing was integrated to reduce the idling time of the equipment in workstations. To achieve this project, the following objectives were concluded, the evaluation of process parameters on availability, performance and quality and the total product of the process parameters gave the performance of the continuous line manufacturing system in a rice packaging company. The overall equipment effectiveness results obtained after collecting data for a shift lenght time is 14.69697% while the average availability, performance, quality are 92.35697%, 16.42210%, and 97% respectively. The significance of the performance evaluation of a rice packaging company using overall equipment effectiveness is to measure productivity of the equipment and improve efficiency. Line balancing was introduced to the rice packaging production line by creating workstations to reduce idling time, reduce waste and enhance workflow in the production line by 76.39%. In conclusion, the production line was improved by 61.69303 % after line balancing from 14.69697% to 76.39%.
