Abstract

This paper briefly describes a vertical axis wind turbine. The behaviour of the Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT), present technological state, innovative finding through modelling work and future direction of VAWTs were reviewed. It can be seen that VAWT plays an important role in the present energy crisis. One can foresee that human beings are dwelling in a world making use wind turbines and solar panels, due to present energy crisis with the non-renewable energy. Wind energy has been known as a capable renewable option. Although the full life cycle accounting shows VAWTs are beneficial on a basis of cost and materials over horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWTs), presently the VAWTs do not generate sufficient electricity due to various challenges which discussed in this paper. For, drag driven VAWT (Savonious type), lift driven VAWT (Darrieus type) and hybrid of both (D+S), the turbine efficiencies can be improved by adding the deflector system that guides the wind towards the turbine blades. A lot of researches being done at present in this level. From the immense survey of the present technological states of VAWT, it was observed that China is the principal researcher in this field from the ancient times while European countries serve up their place in this research field.
