Abstract

Electrical maintenance environments are inherently hazardous due to the presence of energized conductors, arc flash incidents, short circuits, and unexpected equipment failures. These risks can lead to severe injuries or fatalities if proper safety precautions are not strictly followed. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) serves as the last line of defense for workers; however, ensuring consistent PPE compli- ance remains a major challenge in industrial environments due to negligence, lack of monitoring, and human error. This paper presents an Internet of Things (IoT)-based PPE compliance system that utilizes RFID technology for real-time monitoring and enforcement. The system integrates a NodeMCU microcontroller, RC522 RFID reader, RFID-tagged PPE compo- nents, and a relay-based access control mechanism. The proposed system verifies whether a worker is wearing all required PPE before granting access to hazardous zones. Experi- mental analysis demonstrates reliable operation, low latency, and effective enforcement of safety protocols. The system offers a cost- effective, scalable, and efficient solution to enhance workplace safety in electrical maintenance applications.
