Evaluation of Distribution System State Variables using Forward-Backward Sweep Technique

B. Yashodha, B. Neelakanteshwar Rao

Abstract

Load flow analysis of distribution systems has not received much attention, unlike load flow analysis of transmission systems. However, some work has been done on load flow analysis of a distribution system, but choosing a solution method for a practical system is often difficult. In general, distribution networks have a radial structure and the R/X ratio is very high. Load flow analysis of a power system is used to determine the steady-state solution for a given set of bus loading conditions. The solution of a load flow or power flow study provides information on voltage magnitude and phase angles, active and reactive power flow in individual transmission lines, and total active and reactive power losses.
