An Analytical Case on Phishing Attacks and Their Mitigation Strategies

Abstract

The internet has become an integral part of everyday social and economic interactions, not just for individuals but also for businesses. Companies engaged in online trading can gain a competitive edge by reaching global customers without marketplace restrictions, leveraging the advantages of e- commerce. However, online consumers face various cyber threats that can lead to financial losses, data manipulation, damage to brand reputation, exposure of private information, and diminished trust in digital transactions, especially in online business and banking. One significant cyber threat is phishing, which involves impersonating a legitimate website to deceive users into revealing sensitive credentials like usernames, passwords, and social security numbers. This paper provides an analysis of phishing activities, their consequences, causes, prevention strategies, and cybersecurity concerns. Additionally, it explores methods for establishing a more robust cybersecurity lab to combat phishing and malware threats. The paper also presents an overview of the Los Angeles Cyber Lab (LACL), highlighting its role in defending against cyberattacks and facilitating knowledge sharing on emerging threats.
