Gas Turbine Generation Behaviour with Respect to Frequency Changes

Uwho, Kingsley Okpara, Gogo, Princewill Philip

Abstract

Gas Turbine has been one of the major means of generating power especially in the developing nations before shifting attentions to renewable energy resources. Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGTs) have been mostly used by large generating power companies. This paper examines the behaviour of the governor of the CCGT and thus the output power with respect to frequency variations. The network of Afam VI is modelled in MATLAB Simulink software and simulation carried out under low and high frequencies. From the result obtained, the stable grid system operation is between the range of 50Hz (±0.4) and the gas turbine is actively on its maximum  production depending on the forecast. Below or above the mention frequency range, the system becomes unstable which can lead to the total grid collapse if not managed. Grid collapse can be avoided when all the generating power stations operate on frequency response. Also power generating station and national control centre can operate on SCADA supervisory control and data analysis.
