Commercial Motorists: Implications of Language Use on African Cultural Values in Selected Motor Parks: A case study of Ogbomoso, Nigeria

Abstract

Commercial drivers, conductors, loaders and passengers are critical actors of commercial activities in motor parks in urban centers they load or off load freights and services from particular origins to specific destinations. It is observed that linguistics incessantly used are loose and quirk having little or no regard for the society`s acceptance among Blacks` race community. Thus, draws an attention to assess an extent to which the language has been derogatory to the society`s affective. Mixed approach was used, purposive and survey sampling methods were used, the research was carried out in Ogbomoso north and south local governments Takie and Ora Gather respectively, the two major motor parks were surveyed, total ninety commercial motorists were sampled, primary and secondary data were also used. PPMC was used to analyze hypothesis one while linear regression analysis was used to analyze hypothesis two. The result of (PPMC) shown that all predictors were significant while the model of regression was positively significant where R=79.4% having strong relationship on dependent variable, R2= 63.0% having significant contributions on the dependent variable. The study concluded that the expressions reflect both functional communication needs and cultural deviation tendencies often undermining indigenous African values. The study, therefore, recommended that there is inevitability of education and enlightenment programs across motor parks in Nigeria to reduce the prevalent indecent language within the commercial transport ecology.
