Integration of Lean and Sustainability in Construction Project

S. Dhaarini, G. Chitra

Abstract

Construction industry is one of the major economic sectors in India. In research by the U.S. Green Building Council, the construction industry accounts for 40% of worldwide energy usage. Also amount of C & D wastes in India has been estimated to be 10 - 12 million tons annually according to Central Pollution Control Board, 2017. It is high time to minimize waste and use resource efficiently. Lean Construction(LC) and Sustainable Construction(SC) has its own significant economic and environmental benefits. LC is application of lean manufacturing principles to the construction process, which helps to reduce the wastage of resources while increasing the value.SC is a comprehensive integration of environment, social and economic issues. Both lean and sustainability have their core as the efficient usage of valuable resources. The strong need for integration of LC and SC are to reduce the impact on global environment, to optimize the process and to improve the building as whole. In this paper, the present status of implemented sustainable practices and various factors causing waste were identified through questionnaire survey. The pilot study was conducted in Institutional building and the lean tool was adopted to find its impact on the sustainability parameters. The interactions between lean and sustainable concepts were investigated to draw the relationship matrix between them and percentage of interaction was known.
