Innovative Methodology and Algorithm for Evaluation of Safety of Columns

Abstract

 

This study aimed to develop a methodology and algorithm to evaluate the safety of columns under new loads. All around the world, it is a common practice to change the utility of existing building to meet the current demands of the owner(s)/occupants. To ensure the safety of existing buildings under new load (i.e., due to the horizontal/vertical extension or both), evaluation of modified structure needs to be carried out as per latest revision of codal provisions. To evaluate the safety of columns under new loads is very tedious and time consuming process, since capacity of column is highly non-linear as its moment carrying capacity keeps changing with increase in axial load.
