Accident Study and Analysis of Dhulikhel-Nepalthok Section of B.P. Highway in Nepal

Abstract


Each year about 2000 people die in road crashes in Nepal. A systematic approach to analyze the causes of such road crashes is lacking. This research is intended to analyze accident patterns for Dhulikhel- Nepalthok road section of the B.P. Highway in central development region of Nepal. This study is based on the secondary data collected from the traffic police office at Banepa, Dumja and Mangaltar stations. The road accident data of 52 months (From August 2008 to December 2012) was compiled and analyzed for their severity, causes and types. The primary data such as response through group discussion, interview with vehicle drivers, traffic police officer and road users were also collected and analyzes. This study found that 70% of fatal accidents were due to high speed driving. Among the total fatalities, 60% were bus passengers, 30% were car passengers and 10% were motorcyclists.
