Study of Green Concrete versus Conventional Concrete by Replacing Coarse Aggregate with RCA

Abstract


Concrete is the basic and most important construction material used in the world. Due to its wide use all over the world it becomes necessary to make the concrete economical and nature friendly. The currently used concrete uses ingredients which add significant amount of carbon dioxide to atmosphere during their extraction also there is a well-known problem for disposal of waste material and byproduct generated by various industries worldwide. The replacement of basic ingredient of concrete such as cement or fine aggregate or coarse aggregate by the waste material and byproducts will solve the problem for disposal of these
material and also reduce the carbon dioxide emitted by ingredient of concrete during their extraction. Therefore, the green concrete is nothing but the concrete which is more environmentally stable and thus eco-friendly in nature. In this study, different concrete cubes are prepared by partially replacing coarse aggregates with RCA (Recycled Coarse Aggregate) and are tested to determine their compressive strength and load bearing capacities in relation to conventionally used concrete. With this, a comparative analysis of strength achieved by 5%, 10% and 15% replacement of coarse aggregate with RCA in green concrete against the presently used conventional concrete is conducted and an optimum percentage by which coarse aggregate is replaced with RCA to get the maximum strength is established.
