Beyond the Accident: A Geospatial and Policy Assessment of Road Safety Interventions in Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria

Ojo Jeremiah, Fatai Ademola Raimi

Abstract

Road safety remains a critical concern in rapidly urbanizing Nigerian cities, where rising vehicular density, inadequate infrastructure planning, and weak compliance with traffic regulations heighten accident risks. This study assesses the effectiveness of existing road safety interventions in Ado-Ekiti, a fast-growing urban area in Southwestern Nigeria, by evaluating both infrastructural (road maintenance, traffic control devices) and non-infrastructural measures (regulation enforcement, public awareness campaigns). A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining spatial analysis of accident hotspots using Geographic Information System (GIS), key informant interviews with transport stakeholders, and structured surveys of road users.
