A literature Review of Pharmacological Activity on Saussurea obvallata
Abstract
Saussurea obvallata, an endemic Himalayan herb, has been traditionally used to treat various ailments, including wounds, paralysis, cardiac disorders, and digestive issues. This review explores the phytochemical composition and pharmacological activities of S. obvallata, highlighting its potential as a valuable medicinal plant. The herb contains a diverse array of bioactive compounds, such as flavonoids, alkaloids, phenols, terpenoids, and saponins, which contribute to its therapeutic properties. Pharmacological studies have demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects through the inhibition of cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase enzymes, as well as significant antioxidant activity via free radical scavenging. S. obvallata exhibits antimicrobial properties against various bacteria and fungi, supporting its traditional use in treating wounds and infections. The plant also possesses analgesic, anticancer, hepatoprotective, and cardioprotective properties, as evidenced by in vitro and in vivo studies. However, further research is needed to elucidate the mechanisms of action, pharmacokinetics, and long-term safety of S. obvallata extracts. Conservation efforts are crucial to protect wild populations from overharvesting. Despite the need for additional clinical validation and standardization, S. obvallata represents a promising natural resource for developing novel therapeutic agents.
