Abstract

Cracked heels are a very common condition caused due to various reasons. It can be either internal health conditions or external factors. Symptoms can be mild to severe ranging from dry flaky skin to painful bleeding or suppurated cracks. In this case series study, an ancient herbal formula written in Ola leaves manuscript is evaluated for its ethnopharmacological efficacy in the management of cracked heels. Primary data were gathered through the patients recruited from the clinic and the authentic Ayurvedic and traditional texts, journals data were collected. Patients were advised to continue the application for three months. Symptoms were analyzed by comparing the before and after conditions. A pharmacological analysis was carried out to reveal the importance of the ingredients in the formulation. Evaluation of the progress of the patients revealed that all of them recovered from cracked dry feet. The duration needed for 100% recovery and to regain normal skin color varied in the individuals depending on the causative factors, their lifestyles, and their overall health. Analysis of the pharmacological effects of ingredients revealed their actions in detoxification of the skin, cleansing, exfoliation of dry and dead skin, healing, antiseptic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, reducing the burning sensation and itching, moisturization, and restoring skin complexion. Evaluated data led to the conclusion that the herbal formula selected from the Ola leaves manuscript is effective in the management of cracked heels. Further pharmacological and laboratory investigations and clinical investigations with larger samples can be suggested. Developing and manufacturing the formula into a pharmaceutical product also can be suggested.
