PREPARATION AND FORMULATION OF MICROSPONGE DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEM

Athira T P, Chethana Sahadevan

Abstract

The aim of this project is to develop a novel micro sponge drug delivery system to improve the safety, effectiveness, and quality of various pharmaceutical and personal care products. Micro sponge technology offers a versatile platform for the controlled release of active ingredients, providing targeted delivery and enhanced bioavailability. The project will focus on three main applications: topical delivery, oral delivery, and bone and tissue engineering.

In the topical delivery application, microscopic, polymer-based microspheres will be synthesized to encapsulate a wide range of substances, which can then be integrated into plans like creams, gels, fluids, or powders. This will enable precise control over the release of active ingredients onto the skin, enhancing therapeutic outcomes and minimizing adverse effects.

For oral delivery, the micro sponge system will be utilized to increase the solubilization rate of poorly water-soluble drugs by entrapping them within the microspheres' pores. This will result in the reduction of drug particles to microscopic size, significantly increasing the effective surface area and facilitating quicker dissolution and absorption in the gastrointestinal tract.

In the field of bone and tissue engineering, the project will investigate the incorporation of micro sponge systems into composite materials for bone regeneration. By creating porous structures that mimic the natural architecture of bone tissue, these systems will serve as reservoirs for growth factors, cells, and bioactive substances, promoting tissue regeneration and repair.

Overall, the development of a micro sponge drug delivery system holds great promise for revolutionizing drug delivery and tissue engineering, offering improved therapeutic efficacy, patient compliance, and clinical outcomes across various medical and cosmetic applications.
