Abstract

Introduction and Objectives: Diabetes mellitus is a common non-communicable disease. It is a chronic medical condition that can be controlled, but lasts a life time. Life time treatments for diabetes patients, particularly with insulin can adversely affect to routine activities hence the quality of life of patients. Most of the studies carried on insulin-related quality of life of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) are from developed countries. There are no studies on this issue from Sri Lanka. The main objective of this research was to assess the effect of insulin therapy on the daily life of T2DM patients attending clinics of Teaching Hospital, Gampola Sri Lanka.

Methodology: A descriptive cross sectional study was conducted. A total of 422 patients were calculated to use as sample using random sampling method. An interviewer administered telephone based questionnaire was used which included questions on details of quality of life in terms of performing daily activities. Answers to questions were used to determine effect of insulin therapy on quality of life.

Results: A total number of 384 T2DM patients participated for the study. According to the research 1-5 year treatment duration category positively affected on most of daily life activities. Regular attendance to clinic negatively affected only on financial activities. Patients who are treated with only insulin were negatively affected on social life activities. Higher insulin dose (more than 60 units) negatively impacted on all the daily life activities except on family life activities.

Conclusion: Overall effect of insulin therapy is slightly positive on daily life activities on T2DM patients presented in medical clinic of Teaching Hospital Gampola.
