Nutraceutical : New Health Booster Of Pharmaceutical Product
Abstract
Dietary supplements, functional food ingredients, and nutraceuticals are crucial for promoting health and lowering the risk of disease. Even though a wide range of bioactives are known to have the anticipated positive effects, the processes by which they do so are diverse and may function singly or in concert. For instance, it is known that phenolic chemicals have antioxidant properties or function through other pathways. Furthermore, the activity of the resulting products may change when bioactives are conjugated with other active or inert ingredients. Consequently, it was shown that conjugating phytosterols with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) reduced cholesterol in a mouse model and that conjugating esters of epigallocatechin gallate with DHA could stop colon cancer in mice.Bioactives may undergo changes during processing, which could impact their effectiveness in in vitro and potentially in vivo models. Furthermore, plant-based processing by-products have a high concentration of various bioactives compared to the main products. These bioactives can be utilized as supplements to treat specific health issues or as value-added ingredients in food. Examples will be given to show the ideas and methods applied as well as the anticipated advantages.
