Stress-Strain and Strength Development Characteristics of Quarry Dust on Remolded Cohesive Soil
Abstract
This study evaluates quarry dust stabilization of soft, highly plastic A-7-6 soil (AASHTO) from multiple boreholes. Additions of 0–20% quarry dust consistently increased Maximum Dry Density (MDD) and reduced Optimum Moisture Content (OMC), with peak MDD of 2340 kN/m³ and OMC of 9.4% recorded at 20% dust for BH1. Strength parameters improved optimally at 10% quarry dust: cohesion rose from 60 to 68 kN/m², friction angle from 15.2° to 16.4° (BH2), while normal, deviator, and shear stresses peaked at 210, 420, and 126 kN/m² respectively under 300 kPa confining pressure. All stabilized mixtures satisfied Nigerian minimum MDD standards.
