Permeability of Soil with Varying Percentage of Coir

Abstract

Permeability of the soil is the property by which the soil permits the flow of fluid through it. It helps in reducing the stormwater run-off by allowing rainwater into the soil ground. A lack of permeability increases flooding in urban areas during storm events affecting infrastructures. In this paper, we did a comparative study on the permeability of soil reinforced with coir fibers and coir pith at different inclusion. The tested soil sample was high plasticity organic soil obtained locally from the site Champakulam (Kuttanad). The increase in permeability was found maximum in the case of fiber at 1%.
