M. S. Hashi, Shajahan Ali, M. S. Shirin

Abstract

Reinforced concrete structures are exposed in harsh environment yet it is expected to last longer time with a little repair or without any repair management. Bangladesh is an alluvial deposited country. More than 53% area is affected by sulfate, salinity and chloride in water and soil. Sulfate can attack cement paste by affecting calcium aluminates in cements and chloride can attack reinforcement by penetrating into the concrete that causes a hazardous damage of existing building. Sulfate and chloride can severely damage the existing building in coastal regions. In every year a huge amount of budget is passed only for the existing building management and repair.
