Suitability of Clay as a Homogeneous Embankment Fill Material

Godfrey Jaja, Telema Ngoye, Horace Jaja

Abstract

This research was aimed to studying the suitability of clay as a homogeneous embankment fill material. Clay sample were collected at four locations in Rivers State. Index property and Triaxial tests were conducted. The test results were used in running the slope stability analysis for the embankment using Fellenius method. From the analysis, several factors of safety were obtained but the highest factor of safety was obtained at Oduoha with a FoS of 7.174 and slope angle of 36.37. Research showed that clay is suitable for embankment fill material but to avoid failure, height of embankment should not exceed 12m.
