What the PISA Test May Teach Us about Math Literacy in the Age of Data Science

Ramesh Dhiman

Abstract

The requirements for mathematical literacy change depending on the situation. This setting has largely remained stable over many decades, particularly for classroom mathematical practices. Mathematical literacy is being redefined by advances in science and engineering, most notably in the emerging field of data science. The implications of new definitions of data science for the workplace and scientific development are examined in this paper. It will use a Junior Cycle Project Maths report, viewed through the prism of PISA 2016, to approximate Irish students' positions on various data science topics.
