A Comparative Study on Personality Trait and Professional Commitment among Fourth Year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSc(N)) Students and Registered Nurses

Abstract


Choosing a right person for the particular profession who identify its goals and values and possess the potential to become dedicated and productive members. Objectives: The objectives of the study were to assess the personality trait of fourth year BSc(N) students and  registered nurses, assess the professional commitment of fourth year BSc (N) students and registered nurses, compare the personality trait of fourth year Bsc(N) students and registered  nurses., compare the professional commitment of fourth year BSc(N) students and registered nurses, find out the association between personality trait and professional commitment of fourth year BSc(N) students and registered nurses. Method: comparative study was conducted among 100+100 fourth year BSc(N) students and registered nurses at private hospitals. Hospitals and colleges were selected by convenient sampling technique. Student’s number was less so they are selected by convenient sampling technique. Staff nurses were recruited proportionately from selected hospital and used simple random sampling method is used to select participant for the study. Professional commitment scale was used to measure the professional commitment. Eysenck personality Questionnaire Revised –short form (EPQR-S) used to measure the personality trait. Result: The findings revealed Majority 173(86.5%) of the fourth year students have extraversion personality when compared to registered nurses 143(71.5%) Neuroticism personality is highly seen among registered nurses 55(27.5%) than the fourth year BSc (N) students 26 (13%).Professional commitment is dominant among fourth year BSc nursing students 71.45 ± 5.9 than the registered nurses 66.64 ±4.3. The  result of  t test shows that there is a significant difference in  the mean scores of  three dimensions of  professional commitment of fourth year Bsc(N) students and registered nurses(p<0.05) .These result suggest that three dimensions of commitment does have an effect  on fourth year BSc(N) students and registered nurses. The result also show that there is a significant association between personality trait and professional commitment among fort year BSc(N)students and registered nurses(P<0.01)
