Abstract

In developing countries such as Nigeria, the ages at which women who are experiencing menopausal symptoms are not taken seriously by women and health worker. The objectives of the study were to assess the knowledge of women on menopause and ways of adaptation to menopause before and after education intervention. This study adopted descriptive research design on 130 respondents which was purposively selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Participants were aged between 45-69years. Descriptive and Chi-square test statistics were used to analyze the quantitative data. Mean age of participants at menopause was 48years. The study revealed that some menopausal women in the study group did not know about the risks associated with menopause. They regarded sex as the cause of most illnesses that occur in women after menopause thus sex is highly discouraged among menopausal women. Many participants did nothing about the symptoms they experienced while those who made any attempt tried remedies like self-medication, body massage, praying, stopped having sex. The inference from the Chi square test revealed that there is significant relationship between knowledge before and after educational intervention on menopausal symptoms among women.
