Abstract

Introduction: Breast self-examination (BSE) is a vital method for early detection of breast cancer, yet many young women lack sufficient knowledge. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a video-assisted teaching programme on improving knowledge regarding BSE among female students at the College of Nursing, Adesh University, Bathinda, Punjab.

Objective: The objectives of the study were to assess the knowledge of breast self-examination (BSE) among female students before and after the video-assisted teaching programme, to determine the effectiveness of the programme in enhancing their knowledge of BSE, and to examine the association between knowledge scores and selected demographic variables such as age, religion, residence, type of family, family history, marital status, and source of information.

Methodology:
A quasi-experimental pre-test-post-test design was used. The study included 60 female students selected through stratified random sampling. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire, consisting of demographic details and knowledge of BSE. Descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation) and inferential statistics (Chi-square, paired t-test) were applied for data analysis.

Results:
The post-test results indicated that the majority of students had moderately adequate knowledge about BSE after the intervention. A significant improvement in knowledge scores was observed, with the mean score increasing from 15.5 (pre-test) to 16.8 (post-test). The paired t-test showed a significant difference (t = 0.147, p < 0.05), confirming the effectiveness of the video-assisted teaching programme.

Conclusion:
The video-assisted teaching programme significantly improved the knowledge regarding breast self-examination among female students, highlighting its effectiveness as an educational tool for enhancing awareness on breast health.
