Effect of behavioural intervention on anxiety and tolerance among patients undergoing oesophagogastroduodenoscopy in a tertiary care hospital
Abstract
The esophagogastroduodenoscopy or the endoscopy is one of the innovative development that had contributed enormously in the field of Gastro medicine. The patients who are subjected for endoscopy will pass through a stage of emotional disturbance during the pre-procedure stage. The present study was intended to assess the effect of behavioural intervention among patients undergoing esophagogastroduodenoscopy in a tertiary care hospital,Thiruvananthapuram. The main objective of the study was to assess the level of anxiety among patients undergoing oesophagogastroduodenoscopy, effect of behavioural intervention on level of anxiety among patients undergoing oesophagogastroduodenoscopy, effect of behavioural intervention on level of tolerance among patients undergoing oesophagogastroduodenoscopy, find the association between level of anxiety among patients undergoing oesophagogastroduodenoscopy and sociodemographic variables, find the association between level of tolerance among patients undergoing esophagogastroduodenoscopy and sociodemographic variables. Quasi experimental pre-test post test control group design was adopted. Sample consisted of 60 patients (30 experimental, 30 control) undergoing esophagogastroduodenoscopy selected using purposive sampling technique from gastroenterology department of Ananthapuri Hospitals and Research Institute. A structured interview was used to collect socio-demographic and clinical variables of the participants. A State Trait Anxiety Inventory Scale was used to assess the anxiety and Likert’s tolerance scale was used to assess the tolerance level. A pre-test was given to both experimental and control group using the STAI scale. Following pre-test, a video assisted behavioural intervention was given to the experimental group. Apost test STAI scale ,tolerance level was assessed in both group after the endoscopy using the Likert’s tolerance scale.Data was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The Result revealed that there was a statistically significant difference (p<0.05) in the post test score of anxiety and tolerance between experimental and control group. The study concluded that behavioral intervention is effective for patients undergoing esophagogastroduodenoscopy to reduce anxiety and improve tolerance level.
