Learning Practices and Academic Performances among Undergraduate Students in Higher Education Institution at Thiruvananthapuram

Abstract


The research study was conducted to assess learning practices and academic performances among undergraduate students in higher education institution at Thiruvananthapuram. Objectives were i) To assess the learning practices ii) to evaluate the academic performance iii) to find out the correlation between academic performance and learning practices, to find out the association between demographic variables and academic performance. Methodology: Correlational research design was used for the study. The study setting chosen for the present study was Sree Gokulam Nursing college, Venjaramoodu. Hundred and ten BSc Nursing students which include fifty five students from 4th semester BSc Nursing and 4th year BSc nursing who satisfied the inclusion criteria were selected by convenient sampling method. The tools used for data collection procedure were sociodemographic Performa, learning style questionnaire, (section A contains questions for visual practice learners, section B contains auditory practice learning, section C contains kinaesthetic practice learning), and academic performance scale to measure the student‟s achievement across various academic subjects. Results: There was a weak positive correlation between visual learning practice and academic performance, weak positive correlation between auditory learning practice and academic performance. There was a weak positive correlation between kinesthetic learning practice and academic performance.

Conclusion: The study concluded that there is a very low positive correlation between academic performance and learning practices.
