An Assessment of Using Computers in the Teaching and Learning of Computer Education in F.C.T Secondary Schools

Abstract


This research work examined using of Computers in the teaching and learning of Computer Education in Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Secondary Schools. In accomplishing this task, twenty schools were randomly selected from FCT Junior Secondary Schools comprising both private and public schools. The survey design approach was adopted. The methods used in carrying out the study were the use of questionnaires. The population here includes all Junior Secondary Schools in the FCT, Abuja, all Computer teachers, Vice Principals and Principals of the twenty selected schools. Stratified and Simple Random Sampling techniques were adopted in this study, a total number of ten private and ten public schools make up the representative number. Tabulation, simple percentage and proportion were used to carry out the analysis of this project and the following are the major findings from the study: there are insufficient numbers of teachers who specialized in Computer Education in FCT Junior Secondary Schools, likewise there are inadequate computer sets in schools that have computer room. Schools under study have insufficient time for Computer Practical on the school time table, there are very few schools with internet connectivity in their Computer laboratories. On the basis of the above findings, the following recommendations were made: more professionally trained Computer teachers should be employed to handle Computer Education in order to meet up with the population explosion in schools. Government and school management should establish a well-furnished resource room (Computer room) in schools with adequate facilities to facilitate the teaching and learning of Computer Education. The school management should allocate more periods for computer practical on the school time-table. The Inspectors from the Ministry of Education, Education Resource Centre (ERC) and Zonal Headquarters should always go round schools to ensure that the computers are adequate, to cope with the class population.
