Analyzing Industrial Accidents in Bangladesh: Strategies for Enhancing Workplace Safety in Construction

Abstract

The construction industry stands as one of the fastest-growing sectors globally, playing a critical role in shaping infrastructure and economic development. In Bangladesh, this growth is propelled by a rising population, urbanization, and economic advancements, particularly in metropolitan areas. As the construction sector expands, effective construction management becomes essential, especially to ensure the safety of workers, which is often a significant concern in Bangladesh and other developing countries. Unsafe practices and outdated management approaches result in accidents, injuries, and even fatalities, highlighting a need for enhanced safety protocols and awareness. In comparing construction safety between developed and developing nations, a clear discrepancy emerges. Developed countries generally enforce strict safety regulations, conduct regular site inspections, and require rigorous training, reducing the risk of accidents. In contrast, Bangladesh’s construction sites frequently lack comprehensive safety measures, relying heavily on outdated practices. Workers often face heightened risks due to limited safety gear, insufficient training, and a general lack of awareness regarding workplace hazards. This issue is compounded by factors such as unskilled labor, inadequate supervision, and limited personal protective equipment (PPE).
