Surface Modification of Wood Adherend Using Thermal and Mechanical Process for Effective Adhesive Bond Strength

Sandip G GHUGAL

Abstract

Surface treatments of adherend have an essential role in improving the strength and durability of bonded joints in wood materials before the adhesive bonding. The present work is focused on the effect of wood adherent surface modification using mechanical grinding and the heat treatment towards the improvement of the adhesive bond strength. Surface modification of wood adherend was obtained by mechanical abrasion using the different grades size sandpaper. Thermal treatment of wood adherend samples was done at 120°C for 2 hr for improvement of surface modification. The single lap butt joints with varying surface roughness and heat treated wood specimens were investigated mechanically at ambient temperature. The surface roughness values of the wood adherend before and after the heat treatment process have been investigated. There is clear dependency observed in between the adhesive bond strength and surface roughness of wood adherend. There is an adverse effect of heat treatment of wood adherend on the bonding strength but surface roughness improved.
