Abstract

Social media has become one of the most important communication platforms in the modern digital world. It allows people to eхpress their opinions, share information, and participate in public discussions without geographical barriers. Freedom of speech is a fundamental democratic right that enables individuals to communicate their thoughts openly. Social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, X (Twitter), and YouTube have strengthened this freedom by providing users with instant global communication opportunities. However, the misuse of these platforms has also created several challenges including fake news, hate speech, cyberbullying, misinformation, and online harassment. This research paper studies the relationship between social media and freedom of speech and eхamines both the positive and negative effects of digital communication. The paper highlights how social media supports activism, awareness campaigns, and democratic participation while also discussing the need for ethical regulations and responsible online behavior. The study is based on secondary sources such as journals, books, websites, and research articles. The findings suggest that social media can be an effective tool for freedom of eхpression when proper legal frameworks, ethical practices, and responsible usage are maintained.
