From Complexity to Clarity: The Transformative Power of Lay Summaries in Science Communication
Abstract
Lay summaries serve as accessible, plain-language descriptions of research findings, bridging the gap between academic jargon and public understanding. Beneficial for funders, they enhance transparency, aid in communicating with media, and attract researchers. Lay summaries facilitate engagement with policymakers, fostering increased investment in research. At the grant application stage, they assist reviewers in assessing real-world implications and applicants' communication skills. For researchers, crafting lay summaries promotes effective science communication, while the public benefits from increased accessibility to scientific knowledge. Overall, lay summaries play a pivotal role in promoting transparency, engagement, and understanding between the scientific community and society at large.
