Applications of Phase Change Materials in Building

Devesh Mishra, Sumedha Dua

Abstract

This research provides a comprehensive overview of the different possible ways of heating and cooling in the buildings using Phase change materials (PCMs). The thermal performance of different types of systems like PCMs in walls and PCMs in building components other than walls is presented in this paper. All systems use materials with a high heating and cooling capacity by changing their phase over time and thus also help to reduce the energy demand of the building.

Since PCMs are inherently isothermal, it has a high energy storage density and the ability to operate at a variable range of temperatures and conditions. These systems can also use solar energy for their application by storing thermal energy from the sun, making PCMs a sustainable approach to reducing building energy demand and concurrently improving the thermal comfort in a building.
