Sustainable and Corrosion Resistant Ternary Mix Concrete: A State of Art Review

Abstract

Concrete is an extremely accommodating material that often offers trouble-free performance. Concrete durability during a structure's life is rarely an issue in structures that are well planned, built, and maintained. Nevertheless, in practice, this very desired criteria is not often met. The longevity and overall performance of concrete structures have become increasingly important over the past few decades, and this is a worry shared by all. Owing to the stone's alkaline pH of roughly 12 to 13, it is known that rebar inserted in the stone is ineffective. Rebar is therefore more durable since it is not susceptible to corrosion. Nevertheless, issues still arise after a few years of employment. This might be because of its resilience rather than the structural issue. The carbonation of the concrete or the presence of chloride ions, and their concentration on rebars reaching a threshold level, is the source of this durability issue. These elements cause steel to lose its passivity when the pH falls below 10 and corrosion starts. As a result, reinforced concrete structures have a shorter service life, and eventually, they may collapse.
