Fire Safety in Buildings as per the National Building Code of India (NBC)

Jeel A. Patel, Prof. Arpit Gondaliya

Abstract

Fire safety in buildings is a critical aspect of civil engineering, ensuring the protection of lives and property. This literature review explores fire safety measures as prescribed in the National Building Code of India (NBC), focusing on advancements, challenges, and implementation practices. The NBC serves as a comprehensive guideline for the design, construction, and maintenance of fire-safe structures. Key aspects covered include fire detection systems, suppression mechanisms, evacuation strategies, compartmentalization, and fire-resistant construction materials. The review highlights recent studies on the effectiveness of NBC provisions in mitigating fire hazards and examines the integration of modern technologies such as AI-based fire detection and Building Information Modeling (BIM) for fire safety planning. Additionally, it identifies gaps in compliance and enforcement, emphasizing the need for robust regulatory frameworks and increased awareness among stakeholders. This review aims to provide insights into improving fire safety practices in India, aligning with global standards and addressing local challenges.
