Abstract

The system of blood vessels known as the pulmonary circulation, as opposed to the systemic circulation between the heart and all other bodily tissues, forms a closed circuit between the heart and the lungs. On the evolutionary cycle, the first animals to develop a three-chambered heart are lungfishes and amphibians, which also exhibit pulmonary circulation. In crocodilians, birds, and mammals, the ventricle is divided into two chambers, creating a four-chambered heart, which completely separates the pulmonary circulation. These forms start the pulmonary circuit with the right ventricle, which pushes blood through the pulmonary artery that has been deoxygenated.
