Simulation of Unified Series-Shunt Compensator for Power Quality Improvement

K. M. Bhutada, S. S. Jadhao

Abstract

This paper is related to the simulation of a Unified series-shunt compensator (USSC) which focuses on testing its ability to improve energy quality in a power distribution system. The USSC simulation model encompasses two 12-pulse inverters which are linked in series and in shunt to the system. A generalized sinusoidal pulse width modulation switching procedure is created in the proposed controller design for quick control activity of the USSC. Simulations were carried out using the MATLAB electromagnetic transient program to validate the performance of the USSC model. Simulation results shows that the capabilities of the USSC in performing voltage sag compensation, voltage unbalance mitigation, flicker reduction, power-flow control, UPS mode, and harmonics elimination. USSC gives a better performance in power-quality mitigation by comparing of the USSC with other custom power devices.
