Abstract

This project presents a secure, remotely controlled door-opening system that integrates a Raspberry Pi with an Android application to provide password-based access management. The system architecture couples a Raspberry Pi (serving as an edge server and GPIO controller) to an electronic locking mechanism through a relay/driver circuit, while a companion Android app provides a user interface for authentication and remote actuation. Communication between the app and Raspberry Pi uses a secured channel (Wi-Fi with TLS or SSH tunneling), and user credentials are protected by hashed passwords and optional two-factor authentication. The Raspberry Pi runs a lightweight web or RESTful service that validates requests, logs access events, enforces rate-limiting and lockout policies, and controls the door actuator only after successful authentication. The design emphasizes reliability (watchdog and retry logic), low latency, and resilience to network interruptions by supporting local fallback modes. Implementation and evaluation cover response time, authentication robustness, and power/CPU resource usage under realistic conditions. The prototype demonstrates that inexpensive, widely available components can deliver a user-friendly and secure remote access solution suitable for homes, small offices, or shared spaces. The paper concludes with a discussion of privacy implications, threat mitigations (e.g., secure key storage, input validation), and avenues for future enhancement such as biometric integration, encrypted local storage, and audit-grade event reporting.
