Abstract

The alarming rate of smuggling in the southwestern Nigeria has been established by researchers. However, measures needed to control smuggling through transportation means is inadequate. This study examined the impact of smuggling on safety of life and property of resident in border towns of southwest Nigeria, the specific objectives were to; appraised the impact of smuggling on safety of life and property and examined extent road transportation contributed to smuggling. The study covered all the border towns of south west Nigeria. Systematic random sampling technique was adopted. Primary data was collected for the study. Multiple regression analysis was used to appraise the impact of smuggling on safety of life and property of people and examine the degree road transportation contributed to smuggling. Findings revealed that road transportation does have significant influence on smuggling, Since p-value = 0.000 < 0.05. Also, with R2 = 0.557, degree to which type of smugglers vehicle, distance coverage, nature of route and safe and easy to smuggle and go free explained the variation in the rate of smuggling in the border towns of south west Nigeria was 55.7 percent. Smuggling had statistically significant impact on safety of life and property of people living in border towns of South West Nigeria, (F = 76.049, p = 0.000 < 0.05). Furthermore, Coefficient of determination (R2 ) was 0.36 while the multiple correlation coefficient (R) was 0.605. Extent to which the predicting variables (violence, loss of life and accident due to smuggling activities) explained the variation in the independent variables (safety of live) was 36.6 percent while a moderate joint relationship existed between the predicting variables (Violence, Lost of life and Accident due to smuggling activities) and the dependent variable (safety of life). It was concluded that road transportation does have significant influence on smuggling, and smuggling had statistically significant impact on safety of life and property of people living in border towns of South West Nigeria.
