Nano-Silica in Concrete: Enhancing Microstructure, Strength, and Durability – A Comprehensive Review

Md Khalid Alam, Harsh Rathore

Abstract

The integration of nano-silica into concrete has opened doors to a new era of construction materials with enhanced properties. This comprehensive review addresses the pressing need to explore innovative solutions for improving microstructure, strength, and durability in cement-based materials. The paper synthesizes findings from an extensive body of research, providing a comprehensive overview of the collective knowledge acquired through numerous studies. Our review reveals that nano-silica, owing to its unique characteristics, has demonstrated a remarkable capacity to elevate concrete performance. It significantly bolsters microstructural properties, leading to substantial improvements in both compressive and tensile strength. The outcomes of various studies highlighted herein reaffirm the substantial potential of nano-silica as an invaluable additive in construction materials. However, challenges such as cost-effectiveness and large-scale production persist, demanding further attention from the research community. Despite these challenges, this review underscores the dynamic nature of nano-silica research and identifies emerging trends and future research directions. In essence, this paper serves as a vital resource for researchers, engineers, and industry professionals, offering profound insights into the transformative capabilities of nano-silica in shaping the future of construction materials.
