Biodegradation of Pesticides in Soil

Abstract

The ever–increasing pollution of environment has been one of the greatest concerns for science the last fifty year. The rapid industrialization of agriculture, expansion of chemical industry, and the need to generating cheap form of energy has caused the continuous release of manmade organic chemicals into natural ecosystems. Soil pollution comprise the pollution of soils with materials, mostly chemicals, that are out of place or are present at concentrations higher than normal which may have adverse effects on humans or other organisms. Worldwide use of pesticides has increased during last two decades. As a consequences pesticides residue and their transformation products are frequently found in soil which may leached to groundwater or move to surface water. This paper summarizes information about pesticides, their incorporation into the environment, microorganisms involved in their degradation and finally a simple and effective system (Biobed) to minimize environment contaminate from pesticides.
