Design of Modern Sanitary Landfill

Abstract

The improper disposal of solid waste creates severe environmental impacts such as air pollution, soil pollution, ground water contamination, surface water contamination and public health problems. To overcome these environmental impacts, we design the sanitary landfill for dumping Virudhunagar town solid waste. The proposed landfill has the design life of three years. And the proposed site is located in P.Kumaralingapuram village having area of about 2625m². For the design of landfill we use design codes mentioned in EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) manual. To maintain proper sanitary conditions, we provide surface drainage collection system, leachate collection system, landfill gas collection system, groundwater monitoring wells, covering system, landfill liners, and buffer zone etc.
