Abstract

The alarming rate of smuggling in the southwestern Nigeria has been established by researchers. However, measures needed to control smuggling through just in time approach in transportation is inadequate. This study performed impact analysis of road transportation on control of smuggling in border towns of south west Nigeria. specifically it’s; identified the characteristics of the road networks, ascertain the relationship between level of road network connectivity and smuggling control and identify the major hindrances of road transportation in smuggling control in border towns of south west Nigeria. The study covered all the border towns of Lagos state, Ogun state and Oyo state. The study population was 514072, while the sample size as determined with Yamane formula was four hundred. Multi-stage sampling technique was adopted. Primary data was collected in three phases. Frequency count and percentage were used classify major hindrance of road transportation in smuggling control. Correlation analysis was adopted to ascertain relationship between level of road network connectivity and smuggling control. Gamma index was employed to test for the level of network connectivity. Findings revealed inadequate number of vehicle, state of route, high cost of vehicle maintenance numerous illegal routes were identified as the major factors hindering transportation of Nigeria Custom Service. Strength of association between Gamma index and rate of truncated smuggling was 0.708 (p = 0.000 < 0.05) affirmed that road connectivity does have relationship with smuggling control. It was recommended that technological device capable of prompt/real time information about movement of contra-ban goods be made available for the Nigeria Custom Service. Adequate vehicles for patrol purpose use be made available.
