Experimental Study on Treatment of Automobile Service Station Effluent using - Prosopis juliflora

Revanth K, Vinothkumar R

Abstract

Water is one of the basic needs for all living beings on earth to survive. And has also marked its significant contribution in the development of industrialization and urbanization. Automobile service stations use large volumes of water and release wastewater containing harmful chemicals into the environment. These effluent waters are tested and found to contain pollution as like COD, TSS, BOD5, Oil and Grease, phosphates, etc. more than the desirable limits set by regulatory bodies. This study is about the treatment of wastewater using adsorption method to attain water conservation and cost effectiveness for automobile service station operators. With the concern of environmental safety a naturally available adsorbent material is selected. Prosopis juliflora (Seemai Karuvelai) is a weed plant, abundantly available in our country, previous studies on this plant for treating wastewater showed effective results, hence it is chosen for treating automobile service station effluents. This report is a comparative experimental study of both acid (H3PO4) and alkaline (KOH) activated Prosopis juliflora stem carbon for the treatment of automobile service station effluent.
