Abstract

Geological strata containing water that occur beneath the earth may be classified as an aquifer. The presence of an aquifer beneath an earth can have implications for the intrusive investigation and also the redevelopment and further use of the land. An aquifer can be defined as a deposit of rock, permeable by groundwater that may be used to supply groundwater abstraction wells and may also support springs and be in hydraulic continuity with the water in rivers or other aquifers. This present study is mainly concerned about the pollution of groundwater at Ramayanpatty in Tirunelveli region due to waste water treatment plant, solid waste dumping yard and agriculture activity. Groundwater samples from wells & tube wells were collected in and around the study area and the samples are subjected to a comprehensive TDS analysis and simulate the groundwater flow system, solute transport model and predict the TDS level. The groundwater monitoring data, Lithology, hydro geological parameters, topography, and rain fall data are obtained from PWD, CGWB, Survey of India, and India Metrological Department are used in the model. Analysis of water samples around the site is essential to determine the suitability of that water to different purpose like drinking, irrigation etc. The water is to be sampled in periods to assess the contamination rate of water over the year. The samples were characterized and used as model input. The other data like aquifer location and water movement etc are collected for modelling. Based on the findings of the ground investigations, a mathematical groundwater flow and contaminant transport model was created to assess the potential environmental risks. The modelling is done using MODFLOW software using models like Artificial Neural Network and Genetic algorithm. The results were discussed.
