EXAMINING PROBLEMS THAT MILITATE AGAINST THE CHOICE OF LAND USE ON TRAVEL PATTERN OF PASSENGERS IN OLUYOLE ESTATE, IBADAN, OYO STATE, NIGERIA.
Abstract
Urban areas around the world are experiencing rapid growth, leading to increased demand for efficient transportation and well-planned land use. The bus services provided by transit operators in Nigerian towns and cities are mostly unsatisfactory to meet needs of riders, and the services provided suffer from low output. This study is an attempt to examine the interplay between land use and travel patterns as a critical factor in urban planning, influencing the quality of life, economic activities, and environmental sustainability.
The population of the study comprised of residence in Oluyole Estate, Ibadan, Oyo state, Nigeria, from where a sample size of four hundred and fifty (450) residence in Oluyole Estate, Ibadan, Oyo state were randomly selected due to the ease of data collection and their willingness to respond to questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse the socio-economic characteristics of the respondents while mean ranking analysis was used to examine the problems that militate against choice of land use on travel pattern of passenger in the study area.
The results of mean ranking analysis on the problems that militate against choice of land use on travel pattern of passengers in the study area showed that the respondents claimed lack of proper zoning regulations as a major problem that militate against choice of land use in the study area and was ranked first (1st) with a weighted mean score of 3.4442. It is therefore recommended that policymakers should develop comprehensive urban policies that integrate land use planning with transportation strategies, focusing on the unique needs of Oluyole Estate.
