Construction Challenges and Mitigation Strategies in Hilly Terrains

Mr Vanlalnunpuii, Luke Judson

Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of additional costs incurred by the mitigation measures in the execution of construction activities in hilly terrains which are the result of challenges and constraints in the topography, climatic condition, construction logistics, and other parameters including the availability of materials, workers, and procurement constraints. The paper identifies and studies the existing practices of construction activities followed on-site in hilly areas of the Purvanchal region by conducting a case study in the Aizawl City Centre Annex Building, Aizawl, Mizoram, and Synod Bookroom, Aizawl, Mizoram, to understand the challenges and mitigation measures adopted.
The challenges and constraints that may affect construction projects in hilly terrains were identified through a literature study after which case study projects were analyzed on three critical activities impacted by the challenges identified for which the implemented mitigation strategies were studied. Subsequently, an analysis of the additional costs incurred in the activities of the construction projects was done to understand the quantified increased amount due to the challenges identified.
